Anstruther Beach

The beach at Anstruther stretches out in a proper curve of golden sand, backed by a working fishing harbour that still feels like it means something. You'll see boats actually tied up here, not just ornaments - this is where the East Neuk fleet still operates, and that gives the place a genuine working rhythm that seaside towns further south have mostly lost.

The main draw is straightforward: a couple of miles of relatively sheltered sand, decent at low tide for walking, paddling, or just sitting with a coffee from one of the harbourfront cafes. At high tide it shrinks considerably, so timing matters. The promenade has proper character - old fisher cottages, a fish and chip shop that's been operating forever, the Scottish Fisheries Museum if you want context for what you're looking at.

Families with younger kids will find enough here for a morning, maybe three hours if you're not pushing it. Older walkers will appreciate the quieter stretches towards Cellardyke to the east, where the beach gets wilder and less crowded. It's not Instagrammable in the way some Scottish beaches are, but that's partly the appeal - it's real and unpretentious.

Staying nearby at Silverdyke or Kilrenny Mill puts you walking distance from the beach and town. The harbour is the real focal point here, not just the sand itself. Come on a clear day in summer and you'll understand why people have fished here for centuries. Autumn can be moody and atmospheric if you don't mind a bit of wind.
