Ansell's Hill Copse

A copse of mixed woodland that commands surprisingly good views across the Cotswold countryside - it's the sort of place locals know about and tourists miss entirely. The walk up to Ansell's Hill takes about twenty minutes from Westcote, nothing arduous, and the reward is a proper vantage point over rolling farmland and distant villages.

What you're looking at is traditional English woodland management - a mixture of oak, ash, and beech that feels genuinely unspoilt rather than manicured. The undergrowth changes with the seasons, which matters if you're hoping for bluebells or autumn colour. Spring is undoubtedly the best time to visit.

Walkers get the most from it. There's no visitor facility here, no interpretation board, no charge - it's just a wood with a view. That's rather the point. You'll need decent footwear after rain, and the paths aren't always obvious, but that's half the appeal if you like navigating by instinct rather than following crowds.

It's a straightforward add-on if you're staying at Cotswolds Meadow Glamping just up the road. Allow an hour there and back, maybe longer if you're the type to sit and stare at the view for twenty minutes. Don't expect dramatic vistas or heritage information. Expect ancient woodland doing what it's done for centuries, with enough elevation to remind you that this corner of Gloucestershire has shape and character worth the detour.
