Annaghmore Lough

The water here sits absolutely still on a calm day, mirror-like and hemmed in by gentle slopes that rise from the shoreline. Annaghmore Lough, just outside Newry, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a freshwater lake that doesn't shout about itself but rewards a quiet visit.

It's a walker's lake, really. The shoreline path is manageable, nothing punishing, and you'll spot water birds year-round - mallards, coots, the occasional heron if you're lucky. There's no facilities to speak of, no visitor centre or café, which means it stays peaceful. On weekends you might share it with local fishermen or families after a gentle amble, but it rarely feels crowded.

Allow an hour for a walk around, longer if you're into bird spotting or just need to sit and think. It costs nothing and there's no entry booth - you simply arrive and walk. The banks can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

It's not a main attraction and won't anchor a day's outing, but combined with exploring Newry town itself or pushing into the Mourne foothills, it fills a slot nicely. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't reroute your whole trip for it.
