The settlement sits quietly on Cumbrian moorland, its stone foundations scattered across grass and heather like a puzzle only half-remembered. Walk here and you're treading through centuries - Iron Age roundhouses, Roman occupation, Anglo-Saxon activity all layered into the same few acres near Penrith.

What you'll actually see depends on the season and your willingness to read the landscape. There are no reconstructions, no visitor centre with interactive displays. Just earthworks, post holes where buildings once stood, and the faint geometry of ancient life. Archaeology students come here to learn to read the ground. Casual visitors often walk straight past without realising what they're standing on.

It's genuinely worth the detour if you're into that sort of thing - and I mean actually into it, not just Instagram-keen on ancient stuff. Families with restless kids under ten might find it a bit thin on obvious attractions. Walkers heading into the Lake District fringes, though, should absolutely work it into their route.

Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you're just passing. There's no charge to visit, though access can be muddy and exposure is real on windy days. Penrith's only a short drive away if you need proper facilities.
