An Tom

An Tom sits just outside Crieff in Perthshire, a modest peak that gives proper views across the Tay valley if you're willing to put in the legwork. It's not Ben Nevis - more of a steady climb that takes a couple of hours up and back - but the vantage point from the top makes it worth the effort.

This is classic Scottish hill-walking territory. The path winds through moorland and gorse, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Ochil Hills. It's the kind of place walkers return to again and again, partly because it's never rammed and partly because the effort-to-reward ratio works in your favour. Kids aged eight and upwards won't find it tedious, though younger ones might grumble on the descent.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - bring water and something to eat. The climb is free, naturally, and you can start from Crieff itself without paying a penny. Early morning is your best bet if you want clear views; afternoon cloud tends to roll in here.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Loch Earn Leisure Park is barely over a mile away - An Tom makes a cracking half-day outing that won't eat into your holiday. Balquhidder Braes, six miles north, puts you closer to bigger mountains if An Tom feels too gentle after you've tackled it.
