About An Sguabach
The walk itself takes around two hours return, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. On a clear day the vista across the Cairngorms is genuinely striking - you can pick out Braeriach and other major peaks to the south, and the sprawl of Aviemore sits below like a toy town. On a grey day, it's functional rather than revelatory, so timing matters.
Families with older kids (ten plus, say) will find this manageable. Younger children might struggle with the relentless gradient and loose sections near the top. Serious walkers often skip it in favour of nearby bigger peaks, but if you're based at Dalraddy Holiday Park or spending a week in the area, it's a solid morning's work that doesn't demand a full expedition mentality.
Wear proper boots - the path is rough and boggy in patches, and the wind can bite even when Aviemore is calm. Start early if you can, partly for the views and partly to avoid the afternoon queues up the mountain if the weather looks settled. There's parking near the start of the walk, and it costs nothing to climb.
It punches above its weight for the effort required. Not revolutionary, but a proper little hill that reminds you why people moved to the Highlands.
