An Gobhlach

An Gobhlach sits above Tarbert on the Kintyre Peninsula, a modest hill that rewards the short walk with proper views across the Kilbrannan Sound towards Arran. It's not a punishing climb - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes up from the village - but the path can be boggy in places, so decent boots matter. The summit itself is fairly bare, just enough of a viewpoint to feel like you've actually achieved something rather than merely wandered uphill. On a clear day you get the full sweep of the sound and the islands beyond, which is exactly what you come for. This is walkers' territory, really. Families with younger legs might find it a bit dull - there's no café, no play areas, just the walk and the view. But if you're staying at The Gather nearby and want a morning out that doesn't require driving, it's straightforward enough. The real value is that it doesn't take the sting out of the day. You're back in Tarbert for lunch, still have the afternoon for other things. Worth doing once if you're based locally, though it's not the sort of peak that'll stay with you for years. The Kintyre Peninsula has far more memorable walks if you're willing to push a bit further afield.
