An Dubh-loch

The water here is dark - properly dark - which is where An Dubh-loch gets its name. It's a remote Highland loch tucked into the landscape near Strathcarron, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out, though that makes it all the better.

There's not much infrastructure, which is precisely the point. You come here to walk the shore, sit with a thermos, maybe spot some of the local wildlife if you're patient enough. The surrounding hills are steep and dramatic, typical Highland terrain that makes you feel genuinely away from things. It's moorland and mountain scenery without the tourist crowds you'd get further west.

This suits walkers far more than casual visitors. If you're after a quick photo stop, you'll be disappointed. But if you've got a proper boot and an hour or two, the circuit round the loch rewards you with genuine solitude. The water itself is cold and deep - not a swimming spot, but atmospheric on a grey day.

Strathcarron is your base if you're staying locally, though it's a small place. Shieldaig Camping & Cabins five miles away is a decent option for a few nights in the area. Combine this with walks around the broader Torridon and Applecross region if you're doing a proper Highland tour. The loch works best as part of a longer day in the hills rather than a standalone stop - treat it as a destination for walkers who don't mind rough edges.
