Amwell Nature Reserve

The water here draws you in straight away. Amwell Nature Reserve, just east of Hoddesdon, is a series of flooded gravel pits that have transformed into something genuinely worthwhile for birdwatchers and anyone after a proper walk without the crowds. You've got viewing platforms dotted around the lakes where you can stand and actually see things - great crested grebes, cormorants, the occasional heron if you're lucky and quiet. The reserve works year-round, though spring and autumn are peak migration times when serious birders descend with their binoculars. Expect to spend two to three hours here if you're actually looking at birds; forty minutes if you just want a circuit walk with decent scenery. It's free, which helps, and the paths are well-maintained - flat terrain, nothing taxing. This isn't Attenborough-level drama. On a grey weekday in January it can feel a bit bleak. But on a clear morning with light catching the water, you'll understand why people make the trip. Families with young kids might find it a touch slow unless they're already into spotting; older children studying ecology will get something from it. If you're camping at Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site or staying at Toad Abode nearby, it's an easy morning out that fills a gap between breakfast and lunch without feeling like you're wasting a holiday day.
