Ambarrow Hill

The views from Ambarrow Hill roll out across Berkshire's soft green hills, and on a clear day you can see proper distance. It's not exactly Ben Nevis - we're talking 300 metres or so - but the walk up from Wokingham is a decent leg-stretcher without being punishing.

The summit feels like someone's kept a secret. You get woods on the approach, then open sky at the top, with that satisfying moment when the horizon stretches out wider than you expected. There's no visitor centre or tearoom, which means it stays quiet even when the holiday parks fill up. Families with kids of any age will manage it fine; the path is clear and it's not a slog. Local dog walkers clearly know it well.

Allow an hour for the round trip if you're not rushing, longer if you want to sit about and actually look at something. There's no charge, and you can start from several points around Wokingham. Early morning or late afternoon light hits the place properly.

For a park-based holiday in the area, this works well as a morning outing. California Chalet is closest at under three miles, though Scotlands House Campsite up north has better ratings if you're willing to drive a bit further. The hill pairs nicely with a wander round Wokingham town itself - nothing flashy, but proper Berkshire character. Not Instagram-famous, which is precisely why it's worth bothering with.
