Ambarrow Court

The moment you push through the gates at Ambarrow Court, you're in proper woodland - ancient trees overhead, paths that actually go somewhere rather than loop back on themselves after five minutes. This is a working nature reserve just outside Wokingham, and it shows: the land's being managed properly, which means you see things here.

The reserve itself isn't massive, but that's rather the point. You get woodland walks that take between 30 minutes and an hour depending on which route you fancy, ponds that attract waterfowl, and the sort of quiet that reminds you how little of it you normally get. Birdwatchers come here regularly - bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Families with younger kids will find it manageable without feeling like they're trudging round on a forced march.

There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. The paths are reasonably well-maintained but muddy after rain, which is worth knowing. Entry appears to be free, though always check the Bracknell Forest website before heading over - these things change.

If you're staying at Wellington Country Park down the road, Ambarrow Court makes an easy morning visit without eating up half your day. It's the sort of reserve that works best when you're not expecting much - walk, spot some birds, breathe some fresh air, move on. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
