Am Buachaille

The walk up Am Buachaille from near Inveraray is properly rewarding, especially if you're after proper Scottish views without the Cairngorms crowds. It's a modest peak by Highland standards - nothing to scare off hill walkers - but the climb is steep enough to feel like you've earned something by the top.

On a clear day, you get the whole Argyll landscape spread below you: Loch Fyne glinting in the distance, the surrounding glens, and on a really good morning, views that stretch far beyond what you'd expect from a relatively modest height. The approach is straightforward enough, though the path can be boggy after rain, and the final push up the slope needs care when wet.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the steep sections and boggy bits. Bring decent boots and waterproofs - the weather here can turn quickly, and the exposed ridge isn't forgiving.
