Alton Water Reservoir

The water stretches out grey-blue across Essex countryside, and you quickly realise Alton Water Reservoir is far bigger than most people expect. It's a proper working reservoir - built in the 1980s to supply water to the region - but it's become a decent spot for a walk or a bit of outdoor activity without the faffing about that comes with proper tourist attractions.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and how many times you stop to watch the water. The footpath is well-maintained, relatively flat, and passes through woodland in places. In winter it gets moody; summer brings out the cyclists and families. There's a visitors' centre with facilities, though opening hours are variable so best to ring ahead before you make the trip.

It's genuinely good for walkers wanting something manageable without needing to drive far from Ipswich. Birdwatchers do well here too - it's a regular spot for spotting herons and various waterfowl. The reservoir itself is used for sailing and fishing, so there's enough going on to justify the visit. Not a thrilling day out on its own, mind, but paired with the nearby holiday parks - Strangers Holiday Park is only 3.2 miles away and A Swift Escape sits at 6.1 miles - it makes sense as part of a broader holiday plan in the area.

On a grey day it's less appealing. Go when there's decent light and you've got time to linger. Two hours minimum if you're doing the full walk; an hour if you just want the visitors' centre and a stroll.
