Allwoods Copse

A proper woodland walk just outside Southampton, Allwoods Copse is the sort of place you head to when you want quiet trees and a bit of space without faffing about for hours to get there. The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter, the canopy closes in nicely, and there's genuine peace - which matters more than you'd think if you've been camping at Lepe Beach Campsite nearby and fancy an escape from the caravans.

It's straightforward woodland rather than dramatic landscape. You're looking at mixed trees, dappled light filtering through, and paths that meander without too much fanfare. No dramatic viewpoints or heritage plaques - just the forest doing what forests do. Walking boots are probably sensible; it can get muddy after rain.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with very young kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, but if your children are old enough to enjoy spotting wildlife and don't need constant stimulation, a couple of hours here is restorative. It's free to access, which is the main thing - no gates, no car park fees. Just turn up.

Working it into a park holiday around here makes sense. Lepe Beach is barely a mile away if you're staying there, and Sunnycott or Comforts Farm are only three miles down the road. If the weather turns and beach time isn't happening, a forest walk beats sitting in a caravan. Go early in the day if you can - late afternoon light through the trees is lovely, but you'll want decent daylight to navigate properly.
