Allt Samaria

The forest at Allt Samaria is a proper walk through proper woodland - the kind where you actually feel like you've left civilisation behind, even though Llandeilo is just down the road. Ancient trees crowd the narrow paths, and the river below adds that constant gentle soundtrack that makes people forget their phones exist.

It's walkers' territory, really. The terrain climbs steadily enough that you'll notice it in your legs, but nothing that demands special kit or a head for heights. Most people allow ninety minutes to two hours to make sense of the place without rushing. Bring waterproofs - woodland holds onto moisture longer than you'd expect, and the undergrowth stays damp even days after rain.

Historically it's tied to the local iron forges that once operated along the Towy, though the forest has long since reclaimed most evidence of that industrial past. You walk among the ruins of what Welsh industry looked like centuries ago, though you have to know to look for them.

Staying nearby at Towy Valley Caravan Park or one of the glamping sites puts you in ideal territory for mixing woodland walks with the broader Llandeilo area - market town days interspersed with proper forest time. The valley itself is genuinely quiet, the kind of place where a car passing feels like an event.

Free to access, and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, which keeps the crowds down. That's its main strength and its only weakness - you won't find facilities, but you won't queue either.
