Allt Maenderyn

Allt Maenderyn isn't a household name, which is precisely why it's worth the trip. This peak sits in proper Snowdonia territory, a few miles south of Caernarfon, and the walk up rewards you with views across the Gwynedd valleys that most visitors never bother to find.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble - expect around two hours up and down, depending on your fitness. The path winds through moorland with gorse and heather, and on a clear day you get sightlines all the way to the coast. On a misty day, frankly, you'll be walking in cloud for half of it, so check the forecast.

This one suits walkers who've done the honeypot routes around Snowdon and want something less crowded. Families with older kids will manage it fine. The terrain isn't loose scree - it's honest hill walking on decent ground. You won't need crampons or rope work.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Llyn Gwynant or Beddgelert are both within easy striking distance, and you can base yourself there for exploring the wider area. Caernarfon's close enough for supplies and a pub afterwards.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself. Start early, bring water, and dress for Welsh weather - it changes faster than you'd expect. Free to walk, obviously. Allow three to four hours if you're dawdling and soaking in the views, which you should.
