Allt Goch

Allt Goch is a modest peak that rises above the countryside near Llanymynech, offering straightforward walking rather than anything dramatic. You're looking at roughly 400 metres of elevation from the surrounding terrain - not exactly Snowdon, but the climb does the job if you want a proper walk without the crowds that pile onto the bigger hills.

The views from the top sweep across the Powys borderlands, taking in the Tanat Valley and rolling farmland that stretches toward Shropshire. On a clear day you can see far enough to make the effort worthwhile. The walk itself isn't technical - mostly field paths and moorland tracks - so it suits families and casual walkers more than serious hikers chasing adventure.

Allow two to three hours for a round trip, depending on your pace and whether you stop for breath. Early morning gets you there ahead of the weekend walkers, though honestly the peak rarely feels busy. There's no visitors centre, no facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. Winter can make the approach muddy and slippery, so spring through autumn works better.

Stay at Elan Oaks Camping and Caravan Site just 1.6 miles away and you're perfectly placed for combining this walk with exploration of the broader valley. The Pines Caravan Park at 2.5 miles also works as a base. Allt Goch works best as part of a broader walking itinerary rather than a single-day destination - pair it with quieter valley walks or historic villages in the area for a proper weekend.
