Allt Ffynnon-bwla

Turn off the main road near Llandysul and you'll find yourself in one of those Welsh forests that feels properly remote without actually being that far from civilisation. Allt Ffynnon-bwla is essentially a working woodland - Forestry Commission managed, dense with conifers, the sort of place where the light gets filtered green through the branches even on bright days.

It's walkers' territory, this one. There are forest tracks threading through, nothing too demanding but enough to get you off the tarmac and away from the noise for an hour or so. The streams that give the place its name - Ffynnon-bwla means spring or well - run through it, which adds a bit of character beyond just endless rows of trees. Bring a decent waterproof though; the ground stays boggy even days after rain.

Don't come here expecting dramatic vistas or Instagram moments. Come because you want to walk, breathe quietly, and remember why you booked a holiday in Ceredigion in the first place. It pairs well with The Three Spaniels holiday park down the road - a proper base for exploring this part of West Wales without being the sort of place that feels touristy.

Free to access, no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best visited on a clear day - cloud and fog turn it into a bit of a grey slog. Allow a couple of hours maximum, unless you're genuinely keen on forestry management.
