Allt Cul Corriehiam Stone Circle

Walking out to Allt Cul Corriehiam feels like stepping back four thousand years. The stone circle sits on moorland near the Isle of Arran, a cluster of weathered granite slabs arranged in that deliberately precise way Bronze Age people somehow got right without theodolites or GPS. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive panels - just you, the stones, and a fair bit of wind.

You'll need proper boots and patience. The walk takes a bit of navigation, especially if the heather's high, but that's part of the appeal. Once you're there, the circle's intimate rather than grand - ten stones or so, depending on how you count the fallen bits. It's absorbing if you care about archaeology; less so if you're after a quick photo stop.

Pair it with a stroll along the Arran coastline or pop over to explore the broader moorland walks the area's known for. There's no entrance fee, no time restrictions - you turn up when you fancy it. Early morning's best if you want decent light and avoid the afternoon mist that rolls in.

Families with patient kids aged eight-plus might enjoy the hunt for it. Younger ones will get bored quick unless they're already stone-circle enthusiasts. The views across to Arran itself are proper lovely on a clear day, mind you, which alone makes the walk worthwhile.
