Allotments

The allotments on the edge of Doncaster are the sort of place you'd walk past a hundred times and never think twice about - until someone drags you through the gate and suddenly you're chatting to a bloke about his prize-winning marrows. These aren't manicured show gardens; they're proper working patches where locals grow vegetables, soft fruit, and the odd ornamental flower bed that's clearly someone's pride and joy.

It's genuinely worth a wander if you're the type who finds other people's growing experiments interesting. The layout changes seasonally - spring brings rows of emerging seedlings, summer's a riot of beans and courgettes, autumn's all about the harvest glut. There's something oddly peaceful about it, even if you've never grown a tomato in your life. The plots vary wildly in style, from immaculately ordered to delightfully chaotic, and that's half the charm.

Families with kids who've never seen where food actually comes from might find it educational rather than thrilling, mind you. Give it thirty minutes to an hour, then head to one of the two nearby caravan parks - Sunnyview or Bawtry, both excellent bases - and explore Doncaster proper. The allotments work best as a gentle diversion between other activities rather than a destination in themselves. Free to visit and quietly absorbing if you're in the right frame of mind.
