Allestree Library sits on the edge of Derby, a solid Victorian building that's had a proper refresh in recent years. It's not one for the tourist trail - this is a working library where locals actually gather, which is refreshing. The building itself has character, all red brick and tall windows, and inside you'll find the usual suspects: a decent fiction section, reference materials, computers with internet access, and a children's corner that's actually thoughtfully laid out rather than just crammed with plastic tat.

Who gets the most from it? Families needing a morning activity when the weather's rubbish, really. Kids can browse the children's books, there's often a reading corner, and the staff aren't the type to shush you if your toddler gets a bit vocal. Walkers exploring the Allestree area might pop in before or after a ramble - it's convenient rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Hill Farm Camping & Caravan Park just six miles away, it's worth knowing about for a rainy afternoon, though I'd suggest heading into Derby town centre proper first for more substantial attractions.

Admission's free, naturally, being a public library. There's no charge for browsing or borrowing if you fancy picking up a book for the caravan. You'll want an hour maximum unless you're genuinely settling in with reference materials. It's a nice spot if you need it, but don't go out of your way unless you're already in Allestree.
