You walk into a field and immediately realise alpacas are far more entertaining than you'd bargained for. All Things Alpaca Ltd, just outside Ingatestone in Essex, is a proper hands-on experience where you can get up close with these peculiar long-necked creatures. They're curious, occasionally spitty, and absolutely brilliant with children who've got the patience to let them sniff before petting.

The farm is set up for visitors to interact rather than simply gawk through fencing. You'll spend a good hour or so here, depending on how many alpacas demand your attention and how many photos you want to take - and you will want photos. Admission details aren't readily advertised online, so phone ahead to check what they're charging and whether you need to book.

This works particularly well as a morning activity if you're camping at Stuarts Wood Campsite or The Courts Campsite, both within easy driving distance. Neither requires any serious hiking commitment, which makes it ideal for families with younger kids or anyone after something low-key between longer park explorations. Essex isn't exactly known for its wildlife attractions, so finding something interactive and genuinely fun rather than just adequate feels like a minor win.

Go on a dry day if possible - muddy fields and alpacas don't make for pleasant trousers. The novelty easily lasts an hour, though die-hard animal lovers could stretch it longer with a picnic.
