All Saints Church, Longstanton

The twin towers of All Saints Church dominate Longstanton's skyline in a way that feels almost defiant. Built in the 15th century, this is one of Cambridgeshire's most distinctive churches - those two square towers at the west end really do set it apart from the usual single-spire formula you get round here.

Inside, the church is properly spacious with a real sense of light and proportion. You'll find some decent medieval features if you know what to look for - the wooden roof is worth a proper look - though it's the sheer scale of the place that strikes you first. It won't hold families with young kids for long though - maybe twenty minutes, tops - unless they're genuinely into old buildings.

The village itself sits just outside Cambridge, making it an easy detour if you're exploring the fens. There's nothing fancy about Longstanton, but that's rather the point. Several campsite options sit within a few miles - Cuckoo Fen and Hempsall Farm are closest - so you could base yourself in the area and take in both the church and Cambridge proper without too much faffing about. Admission appears free, though opening hours can be unpredictable with smaller churches. Best to check locally before making the trip.
