RAF Cranwell is one of those places that catches you off guard. You'll find yourself walking around what feels like a working air base, except it's also a living museum to a century of British aviation training. The All Aircraft Apprentices monument and heritage sites here tell the story of how generations of young engineers and pilots got their start.

What you're actually looking at is the original training ground for RAF apprentices - the sort of lads who went on to keep our aircraft in the sky during the Second World War and beyond. The parade ground, the workshops, some of the original buildings - they're still standing, and you can still feel the weight of it all. There's a proper sense of purpose here that doesn't need much dressing up.

It's maybe an hour's worth of walking and looking, though history buffs could easily spend longer. Free to explore the grounds, though access varies depending on what's operational. Best to ring ahead or check the gate - it's an active RAF station, so you can't just wander everywhere. Families with teenage kids interested in engineering or aviation will get the most from it. Younger children might find it a bit sparse.

Burton-on-Trent is your nearest proper town, about twenty minutes' drive away. If you're staying at Kingfisher Holiday Park nearby, Cranwell makes a decent half-day jaunt, especially if the weather's on your side. It's not a blockbuster attraction, but it's genuine and quietly impressive.
