Alice Holt Activity Centre

Alice Holt is a sprawling woodland reserve near Farnham where you can actually walk without bumping into a theme park queue. The forest covers nearly 3,000 acres of mixed woodland - oak, beech, and conifers mostly - with a network of trails that range from gentle loops to proper leg-stretchers through the trees.

What makes it work is the sheer space. Bring the kids and they won't get restless after twenty minutes because there's genuine exploring to be done. You'll find ponds, open glades, and sections of the forest that feel genuinely quiet. The activity centre bit means there are events and activities on throughout the year - think guided walks, wildlife spotting sessions, seasonal workshops - so it's worth checking what's on before you visit. The terrain is manageable without being boring, and there are picnic spots dotted through the reserve if you want to settle in for an afternoon.

It's ideal if you're staying at Feather Down Manor Farm or Little Cowdray Farm Glamping - both within easy driving distance - and fancy a proper day out that doesn't require admission fees or booking weeks in advance. Come in spring for bluebells or autumn when the canopy starts turning; summer gets busy with school holidays and the midges can be tiresome. Allow two to four hours depending on how ambitiously you want to walk. Suits walkers and families equally well, though history enthusiasts might find it a bit thin on narrative.
