About Alder Wood
You're looking at an hour or so of wandering through mixed woodland - mainly alders, unsurprisingly, with patches of birch scattered through. The paths are straightforward, reasonably well-trodden, though they can get muddy after rain so proper shoes are wise. There's nothing dramatically scenic here, no dramatic vistas or viewpoints, but that's actually the appeal. It's quiet, good for decompressing, and the sort of place where you might spot deer if you're lucky and move quietly enough.
Families with younger walkers will find it manageable, though there's not much to make them linger - no play areas, no water features, just trees and paths. If you're camping at Between Rivers just down the road, it's an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere. Keen birders do well here; the wood attracts a decent variety of migrants in spring.
Timing-wise, spring and autumn are proper pleasant - winter's a bit bleak and summer can feel claustrophobic under the leaf canopy. There's no visitor infrastructure, no café, no admission charge as far as I can tell, which means go at your own pace without crowds. Worth a couple of hours if you're in the area, though don't expect anything more than a straightforward woodland ramble.
