Alavna Hill

Alavna Hill isn't going to have you scrambling for crampons, but the walk up from Maryport delivers something rather good - wide views across the Solway Firth and back towards the Lake District fells. The peak itself sits just above the town, so you can knock this out in under an hour if you're in a hurry, or take it slower and enjoy the coastal perspective.

The hill works brilliantly if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Harbour Side is barely half a mile away, which makes an afternoon leg-stretch entirely feasible. From the top you get a proper sense of where you are: Irish Sea to the north, Maryport's working harbour below, and on a clear day the distant mountains become unmissable. It's not a lung-busting Alpine challenge, more a straightforward local walk that rewards you for the minimal effort.

Historyheads might find the views interesting given Maryport's Roman past - Alavna was the Latin name for the settlement - though the hill itself is really about the vantage point rather than any on-site archaeology. Families with younger kids will manage it fine; it's the kind of walk where everyone actually reaches the top rather than abandoning halfway.

The best approach is probably after you've done the town proper. Pop up here, get your bearings, then head to one of the parks for the evening. Weather-dependent as always in this part of Cumbria - morning mist can wipe out the views entirely, so pick a clearer afternoon if you can.
