Aird of Coigach

The walk up Aird of Coigach demands respect. You're looking at a proper hill climb from the wee village of Achiltibuie, heading inland from the coast near Ullapool, and it's not one for the faint-hearted or the unprepared. The reward, though, is absolutely worth the graft - you get 360-degree views across the Northwest Highlands that'll stop you dead in your tracks.

On a clear day you'll see the Summer Isles scattered offshore, Ben More Coigach looming nearby, and the whole jagged spine of the Torridon mountains stretched out to the south. The path can be boggy and the wind fierce, so bring proper kit. Allow two to three hours for a steady round trip, depending on your fitness.

This isn't a casual stroll. It's for walkers who know what they're doing and want the Highland scenery without the tourist crowds. Families with young kids will struggle; teenagers with decent legs and some experience will love it. The views beat any postcard you'll find in Ullapool, but you'll have earned them properly.

If you're based at Port a Bhaigh Campsite just down the road, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. The coast around here is magnificent - you might spot golden eagles or white-tailed eagles on the higher sections. Go in decent weather; in mist it's just a wet slog through heather.
