Ainsdale Beach, Southport

The beach at Ainsdale stretches for miles along the Lancashire coast, backed by proper sand dunes that actually feel wild compared to the manicured seaside towns you'd expect round here. Walking out at low tide, you get that soft, compacted sand underfoot - the kind that's actually decent for pushing a buggy or cycling on if you fancy it. The dunes themselves are a nature reserve, so there's something quietly special about the way it's been left alone. It's not a 'destination beach' in the Blackpool sense. No arcades, no rock shops, just genuine coastal landscape.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though there's precious little shelter once the wind picks up. The beach is free and accessible whenever you want it, which is the main thing. Allow a couple of hours if you're actually planning to do something beyond a brief walk - longer if you're heading into the dunes. Go early or late in the day when it's quieter, and definitely check the tide times before you head out, otherwise you'll end up trudging across deep sand that'll knacker you out.

It works well as part of a wider Southport trip if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club is just a few miles inland. The beach itself won't eat up a whole day, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to the coast in the first place.
