African Lion Habitat

The big cats here are the real draw - you can get properly close to lions in a way most zoos don't allow. It's a working habitat rather than a traditional zoo setup, so the focus is on watching these magnificent animals do what they do naturally rather than gawping at them through glass.

You'll spend a good hour or two here depending on how much you want to linger. The lions are most active in the morning, so arrive early if you can stomach the drive from Colchester. It's not a vast operation - this isn't Colchester Zoo - so don't expect a full day out. Kids under ten genuinely love it though; there's something about being in a space where you can actually see the animals move and hunt.

If you're camping at Swallows Field Glamping Pods just down the road, it makes for a decent half-day excursion before heading back for an afternoon by the fire pit. The 5-star rated pods are only 2.8 miles away, so it's no schlep. Alternatively, Colchester Country Park is closer at 2.4 miles and offers a more traditional holiday base.

Timing-wise, go midweek if possible - weekends draw the school-holiday crowds. Check their website before you visit for opening hours and admission prices, as these can shift seasonally. Worth doing once, though it's not the sort of place you'd return to year after year.
