Aesica Roman Fort

The remains of Aesica sit on a windswept ridge above the South Tyne valley, about three miles from Haltwhistle. Not much is left standing - a few stone foundations, some reconstructed walls, the occasional carved stone lying about - but that's rather the point. You're looking at a second-century Roman fort that once housed 500 soldiers guarding Hadrian's Wall, and the landscape tells you why they positioned it here.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The views across Northumberland are genuinely good, and there's a proper sense of isolation that makes the Roman presence feel less museum-like and more real. Kids will probably need managing - there's not much to climb on or touch, and the interpretation boards are small and easy to miss. History enthusiasts, though, will spend an hour picking over the site and imagining the logistics of Roman occupation.

It's free, and you can wander around whenever you like - no gates, no opening hours listed. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're taking photographs or reading every stone. The nearest substantial stop is Haltwhistle, which has cafes and shops. The Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site is just down the road, making this a decent half-day addition to a wider Hadrian's Wall itinerary.

Bring wind-proof layers. The exposed position means it can feel a lot colder than the valley floor, and there's precious little shelter once you're up there.
