The granite monument to Admiral Adam Duncan stands in Tayport, commanding a quiet spot that most visitors walk straight past. Duncan was the man who defeated the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797 - a proper naval victory that you'd think warranted more fuss than it gets these days.

It's a straightforward affair: a tall statue on a plinth, the sort of thing that was chucked up in the Victorian era when the British still had the energy to commemorate their admirals. The inscription tells you what you need to know, and that's mostly it. If you're into 18th-century naval history, you'll find the story compelling. If you're not, you might spend five minutes taking a photo and moving on.

The real appeal is the setting rather than the monument itself. Tayport's waterfront has character - you're looking out towards the Firth of Tay, and on a clear day you get decent views across to Dundee. It's worth a detour if you're already in the area, but not a reason to make a special journey.

Stay at either Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite (both excellent, with 5-star ratings) and you're well-placed to explore Fife's coastline. The statue makes sense as part of a morning's coastal wander rather than a destination in itself. No admission fee, freely accessible anytime.
