Adastra Park

The walk through Adastra Park feels properly restorative - it's one of those Sussex nature reserves that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards you quietly if you take the time. Woodland paths wind through a genuinely wild pocket of the South Downs, with clearings that open onto views you won't find five minutes away in Hassocks.

It's managed land rather than manicured gardens, which means you get real habitat here. Bird watchers make a pilgrimage for the seasonal migrants; families with younger kids appreciate the gentle terrain and the chance to spot wildlife without needing a packed lunch and packed timetable. Walkers racking up miles will find it integrates well into a longer South Downs loop rather than standing alone as a destination.

The reserve sits well positioned if you're staying at Blackberry Wood - only a couple of miles away - or Blacklands Farm further out. Either makes Adastra an easy morning or afternoon extension rather than a special trip into town.

Bring proper shoes if it's been wet; the paths hold moisture. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're being leisurely. Early morning or dusk gives you the best chance of seeing anything with four legs or wings. Free access, no facilities on site that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's not Instagram-famous and it won't thrill you with dramatic vistas, but it's honest work - the kind of place that reminds you why you came to Sussex in the first place.
