Acreknowe Reservoir

The water sits still and dark under the Borders sky, ringed by moorland that rolls away in every direction. Acreknowe Reservoir isn't dramatic - there's no dramatic waterfall or tourist infrastructure here - but that's exactly what makes it worth the drive out from Hawick.

It's a proper walker's spot. The reservoir itself is quiet, good for spotting waterfowl if you've got binoculars and patience. The real draw is the circuit around it - the paths are manageable rather than punishing, taking you through open country where you'll see more sheep than people. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing; longer if you fancy sitting on a bank with a flask.

Historically it's one of those Victorian engineering projects that powered industry downstream, but you're not coming here for plaques and dates. You're coming because the Southern Uplands feel genuinely remote this far south, and there's something restorative about walking somewhere that doesn't have a visitor centre or a gift shop.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might get restless unless they're into spotting birds or splashing in burns. It's free, obviously - no gates, no pay booths. Just turn up.
