Abercamlo Bog

You'll find yourself walking into one of Mid Wales' most underrated ecosystems, where the ground beneath your feet squelches and the air smells distinctly of peat and old water. Abercamlo Bog is a proper working wetland, not the kind of manicured nature reserve you see down south - it's raw, boggy, and utterly fascinating if you know what you're looking at.

The main draw here is spotting the specialised plants that thrive in acidic, waterlogged conditions. Sphagnum moss dominates, alongside sundews and bog rosemary if you visit between late spring and summer. Birdwatchers come for the curlews and occasionally red grouse. It's the kind of place where you'll need proper boots and shouldn't expect a visitor centre or tea rooms.

This works best for serious nature enthusiasts and walkers rather than casual day-trippers. Children might find it dull after twenty minutes unless they're already into spotting plants. Allow an hour to properly explore without rushing, longer if you're photographing or doing any identification work.

It sits well within a Powys caravan holiday, particularly if you're based at Disserth Caravan & Camping Park or The Pines, both only a few miles away near Llandrindod Wells. Combine it with a walk around the Elan Valley reservoirs or head into town for a proper lunch - you'll need one after squelching about.

Check conditions before you go; winter makes it boggy beyond reason, and late summer can be disappointingly dried out.
