Abbots Castle Hill

The walk up Abbots Castle Hill takes about twenty minutes from Bridgnorth and rewards you with proper views across the Severn Valley. It's not high - 316 metres - but the viewpoint has been used for centuries, and there's genuine interest in what you're looking at once you get up there.

The hill itself is manageable for most abilities, though it's steep in sections and muddy after rain. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog, though determined ones will enjoy the scramble to the top. History buffs will get more from it if they know about the castle that once stood here - you won't see much now, but the earthworks tell their story if you know where to look.

On a clear day the Severn curves through the landscape below you like something from a painting, and you can pick out Ironbridge to the south. The walk is free, takes about an hour there and back depending on pace, and works brilliantly as a morning jaunt before heading back to town for lunch.

If you're based at Stanmore Hall Touring Park nearby, this is exactly the sort of half-day excursion that justifies a caravan holiday. It's proper walking country without needing to commit to a full day expedition. Worth doing, especially if you're in the area for a few days.
