Abbey Tintern Furnace

The ruins of Tintern Abbey's ironworks stand just outside Lydney like the skeleton of the Industrial Revolution. This isn't the famous abbey across the border in Wales - this is where monks once smelted iron ore in blast furnaces that roared for centuries. What remains are the stone bones of those furnaces, crumbling walls, and enough archaeological detail to piece together how they did it.

The site sits quietly in the Wye Valley, and it's genuinely atmospheric if you're into industrial heritage. History buffs will spend a decent hour picking through the remains and trying to imagine the heat and noise. Families with children interested in how things work might find it engaging for thirty minutes or so, though there's little in the way of interactive stuff - you're relying on imagination and signage.

It's free to wander round, which is proper generous. The nearest substantial facilities are in Lydney, a few miles off. If you're caravan camping at Forest and Wye Valley or glamping at Penhein, it's an easy detour before or after exploring the broader valley. The walk itself is manageable but the ground can be muddy depending on weather.

Worth a stop if you're already in the area and keen on industrial archaeology. It won't anchor your holiday, but combined with a park stay and the surrounding woodland, it fills out a proper day well enough.
