What remains are substantial chunks of medieval stonework - enough to give you a real sense of what this Augustinian monastery once was, back when it was genuinely important to the region's spiritual and economic life. You can wander the grounds freely, tracing the outline of the cloister and standing in what was the chapter house, feeling the weight of eight centuries of weather and neglect in equal measure.

Historians will find plenty to chew on here, particularly given the abbey's connection to the local wool trade and its eventual dissolution. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no visitor centre, no interactive bits, just the bones of the building itself. That said, if your kids are into actual archaeology and don't need constant stimulation, they'll enjoy picking out architectural details and imagining the medieval world.

It's genuinely free to explore and takes about 45 minutes to an hour if you're thorough. Go on a quiet weekday morning and you might have the place almost to yourself, which adds something. The location works well as a brief Leicester stop while basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Bradgate or Cossiwild Camping - both are close enough for easy access without being in the city itself. It's worth the diversion if you're already in Leicester, but don't make a special trip for it alone.
