Abbey Park

The Severn floodplain here is properly wild - wet meadows, reedbeds, and willows creating a maze of nature that feels properly remote despite being minutes from Pershore. Abbey Park is a working nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, which means you won't find benches or visitor centres, but you will find something far more interesting: genuine habitat.

Walkers should budget two to three hours minimum. The paths wind through the reserve following the water, and depending on the season, you might spot kingfishers, water voles, or dragonflies skimming the channels. Spring is exceptional - the flowers explode across the meadows. Winter floods the paths, so come prepared with proper boots if you're visiting between November and March.

It's not a destination for toddlers or anyone expecting groomed trails, but keen birders, photographers, and anyone who actually enjoys nature rather than just viewing it from a car will find this rewarding. Families with older kids who don't mind mud will manage fine.

Staying at Bredon View Glamping Retreats (just over a mile away) gives you easy access without the commute. The reserve pairs well with walks along the Severn itself - you're in proper orchard country here, with the Malvern Hills visible on clear days. Cotswold Grange is further north, but if you're combining both, you'd need to plan a proper day trip. Free entry, no facilities, and utterly worth the detour.
