Abberton Reservoir viewpoint

The viewpoint here looks out over Abberton Reservoir, a proper working water supply that's been quietly doing its job since the 1930s. It's genuinely vast - the kind of expanse that catches you off guard when you round the corner. You're looking at open water, woodland edges, and on a decent day, surprisingly good light for photography.

This is birdwatching territory, full stop. The reservoir draws serious numbers of waterfowl and winter migrants, so bring binoculars if you've got them. Winter months are liveliest; summer can feel a bit thin by comparison. It's free to visit and takes maybe twenty minutes to have a good look around, though you could happily spend longer if you're patient with the birds.

Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after the first five minutes - there's not much to do beyond looking and pointing. But if anyone in your group is into nature or photography, this delivers. The walk is flat and easy, no real effort required.

Stay at West Mersea Holiday Park (4.5 miles) or Fen Farm Caravan Park (4.8 miles) and you're well placed for this plus the coast proper. Colchester's close enough for a town day if the weather turns. It's the kind of spot you'd tack onto something else rather than make a special trip, but if you're in the area already, the reservoir's absolutely worth twenty minutes of your time.
