A' Bhaintir

A' Bhaintir sits at 926 metres, a proper Highland peak that rewards the effort without being ridiculous about it. The walk from Strathcarron isn't massively technical, though the final push onto the summit does demand real legs. Once you're up there, the view sprawls across Loch Carron and westward towards the coast - on a clear day it's genuinely excellent.

This is a walker's mountain, straightforwardly. Not for families with toddlers, and you'll need proper boots and basic navigation skills because the weather can turn fast. Allow four to five hours there and back from the road, depending on fitness. There's no visitor centre, no café, no shortcuts - it's just the mountain.

The nearest settlement is Strathcarron, a tiny place that serves mainly as a jumping-off point rather than a destination in itself. What makes A' Bhaintir worthwhile as part of a Highland break is its isolation. You won't be queuing. Shieldaig Camping & Cabins sits just 3.3 miles away and gives you a proper base - it's well-reviewed and makes sense logistically if you're tackling peaks in the area.

Go when the weather forecast actually looks decent. Spring and early autumn tend to be most reliable. The ascent isn't lengthy enough to dominate a full day, so you could reasonably pair it with another walk or explore the villages around Loch Carron. It's straightforward, uncluttered, and genuinely worth doing if you're in the Highlands and the cloud base is above the summit.
