You're standing on what was once a Second World War American airbase, where B-17 bombers took off on raids across occupied Europe. The 493rd Debach Airfield Museum preserves this slice of wartime history just outside Woodbridge, in Suffolk's gently rolling countryside.

It's a low-key affair - no grand visitor centre or gift shop, just the bones of a real working airfield where young American crews trained and flew combat missions. You'll find remnants of the original structures, hardstands where aircraft once stood, and exhibits covering the base's operational history from 1943 onwards. For aviation buffs and Second World War history enthusiasts, it's genuinely absorbing; you get a proper sense of scale and purpose that you won't get from a museum behind glass.

Families with older kids might enjoy it, though younger ones could lose interest once they've walked the perimeter. History types will want at least an hour or two, especially if they engage with the staff - many are volunteers with detailed knowledge.
