Yosgill Wood

Walk into Yosgill Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper tall trees - the kind that make you feel about six years old again. It's woodland as it should be: unmanicured, atmospheric, with enough moss and dappled light to justify leaving your phone in your pocket for an hour or so.

The wood sits just outside Kirkby Stephen, making it an easy bolt-on to a Pennines holiday without needing to drive far. Paths thread through beech and oak, and if you're lucky with timing and weather, it's genuinely lovely underfoot. Families with primary-school-age kids will get the most from it - old enough to manage tree roots, young enough to still find sticks thrilling. Serious hikers might find it feels a bit short for a dedicated trip, but as part of a broader walk around the area it slots in nicely.

No visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. The real value here is the quiet - it's the sort of place where you remember why you booked a holiday in Cumbria in the first place, rather than stayed home scrolling. If you're based at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road, it's within spitting distance. Even Wild Rose Holiday Park, a bit further out, isn't far enough that a morning woodland wander feels like a faff.

Go in late spring or early autumn. Summer can feel crowded and clogged with midges; winter's grey and damp in a way that's more depressing than moody.
