Yorks Hill

The walk up Yorks Hill from Edenbridge takes about forty minutes if you're not in a rush, and honestly, you shouldn't be. It's a proper little Kent climb - nothing extreme, but steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the views when you reach the top. The summit gives you a genuine sense of height without requiring climbing boots or specialist gear, just a decent pair of trainers and a bit of puff.

This is walkers' territory. You get sweeping views across the Weald, rolling farmland that stretches out in every direction, and on a clear day you can pick out the distant South Downs. It's the sort of place where people arrive with maps and binoculars, not ice creams and prams - families with older kids will have a fine time, but toddlers might find it a slog. Most folk allow two to three hours for the full outing including the walk back down.

The best approach is timing it for late afternoon when the light's kinder and you've got the hill largely to yourself. Spring and autumn beat summer, when it can get a bit sticky underfoot. It's the sort of walk that reminds you why the Kent countryside still gets under your skin.
