Yew Tree Park

The moment you walk into Yew Tree Park near Yeovil, you're struck by how quiet it is. This proper nature reserve sprawls across ancient woodland where the trees have been doing their thing for centuries, and you can feel it. The ancient yews themselves are the main draw - gnarled, massive things that make you realise how small you actually are. Most people spend an hour or two wandering the paths, spotting whatever birds and insects happen to be about on the day. It's not a manicured experience. There are no themed trails or visitor centres to shepherd you along. You turn up, you walk, you look at trees.

Families find it decent if the kids are past the "are we there yet" stage - you'll need walkers rather than toddlers. History types will appreciate the age of the woodland itself, though there's not much interpretation to guide you through what you're seeing. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice without rushing, and go midweek if you can for fewer people about.

Admission is free, which is the best kind of nature reserve visit. It pairs well with a glamping break at Esme's Escape or Swallowfield, both within striking distance and offering proper comfort after a day outdoors. The woodland isn't dramatic or showy.
