Yelland Coppice

A proper woodland walk through Devon's quieter side, Yelland Coppice is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The forest sits within easy reach of Crediton and makes a solid half-day diversion if you're staying at Yeatheridge Farm Caravan Park just up the road. Dense mixed woodland with a decent network of paths, though nothing spectacular or well-signed. You'll find oak, ash and beech creating that cathedral-like canopy locals love, and on a decent day the light filters through nicely. The floor's damp underfoot even days after rain - proper waterlogged in winter - so decent boots matter. It's fine for families who don't mind trailing through mud for an hour or so, though young kids might find it feels a bit samey after thirty minutes. Walkers and nature types get more from it than thrill-seekers. There's no information board to speak of, no facilities, and you're essentially walking through someone's managed woodland rather than a destination attraction. That's partly its charm - no crowds, no gift shop nonsense. Just trees and the occasional bird call. Free to wander as far as I could tell, though it pays to check locally before you go. The whole place works best as a quick leg-stretch between other Devon activities rather than a reason to make the trip. If you're after proper forest experience with trails and proper infrastructure, you'd be better served elsewhere. But if you want a quiet twenty-minute ramble without the National Trust car park chaos, this does the job.
