Yateley Common Country Park

Yateley Common is one of those spaces that rewards wandering rather than rushing through. Spread across heathland just outside Wokingham, it's a proper slice of the New Forest's quieter cousin - open heath, scattered pines, and enough paths to keep you busy for an afternoon without feeling crowded.

The main draw is the walking. There's no single "attraction" here, which is partly the point. You get gently undulating trails through heathland, occasional ponds that attract dragonflies, and plenty of spots to sit and do nothing in particular. On a clear day the views aren't dramatic, but they're peaceful in a way that busy country parks aren't. Children will enjoy having space to run about, and dog walkers clearly think it's the business - expect to see plenty of them, especially at weekends.

Historically it's been common land for centuries, which explains why it feels less manicured than your typical country park. That's a good thing. You won't find cafes or facilities here, so bring what you need. Allow two to three hours if you want to explore properly without rushing.

It's free, it's accessible, and it doesn't try too hard to be anything other than what it is - a decent stretch of open land where you can breathe.
