Yarchester

The ruins of a Roman fort sit quietly on the edge of Much Wenlock, largely overlooked by the tourists who flock to the town's medieval priory. Yarchester is what remains of a military installation from the 1st century AD - ditches, ramparts, and the faint traces of barracks that once housed soldiers guarding this corner of the empire. It's not dramatic. There are no standing walls or reconstructed buildings. What you get instead is the landscape itself, the earthworks that tell you where things were, and the genuine satisfaction of standing on two thousand years of history without the crowds.

Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will find this rewarding. The site sits within accessible countryside, so it pairs well with a proper stomp across the Shropshire hills. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's no visitor centre, no interactive displays, no gift shop - so treat it as a bonus stop rather than the main event. Combine it with a visit to Much Wenlock itself, where the priory ruins are far more visually striking and better signposted.

Camping nearby is straightforward. Sytche Caravan & Camping Park is less than a mile away, making it an easy base. Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp and Mill Farm Holiday Park offer slightly more space if you want breathing room. Allow an hour for Yarchester itself - less if you're just passing through, more if you're genuinely interested in Roman military layout. Free to visit, as far as I can establish, and accessible year-round. Best in spring or autumn when the light catches the earthworks properly and the grass isn't swallowing them whole.
