Wyken Pool

The water at Wyken Pool sits still and dark, ringed by woodland that feels properly removed from Coventry's bustle despite being barely four miles away. It's a fishing lake primarily, but walkers gravitate here for the perimeter paths and the genuine sense of being somewhere quieter than you'd expect so close to the city.

What you're looking at is a decent-sized body of water with reedy margins and the kind of peacefulness that makes you understand why anglers camp out here dawn to dusk. The paths loop around reasonably well, though they're not manicured or sign-posted like some country estates. If you've got binoculars, the birdlife makes it worth bringing along. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before the flatness of it begins to wear thin, but serious walkers and twitchers will spend a morning here without complaint.

Being a fishing venue, it's free to walk the perimeter, though there will be days when you're weaving around tackle boxes and thermos flasks. No facilities to speak of that I could see, so bring what you need. The nearest caravan parks - Hollyfast and 5 Ways Lakes - are both within striking distance if you're basing yourself in the area. Wyken works best as a quick detour rather than a destination in itself, particularly if you're combining it with other green space around Coventry. It's functional, pleasant, and you'll leave feeling like you've actually had a bit of quiet.
