Worlebury Woods

A steep climb through woodland brings you to one of Somerset's finest coastal vantage points. Worlebury Woods, perched above Burnham-on-Sea, isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops - it's the real thing. You'll find yourself among beech and oak, with worn paths leading upward through quiet forest until suddenly the Bristol Channel opens out below you, sprawling and grey-blue depending on the weather.

The woods themselves are what make this worthwhile. Walkers get the best out of it - there's proper woodland walking here, not a park circuit. The hilltop views reward the effort, and on a clear day you can see across the water toward Wales. It's free to access and takes a solid hour or ninety minutes to do properly, though you could knock it out faster if you're just after the vista. Spring's lovely when the bluebells come through, but honestly any time outside the wettest months works fine.

For families staying at any of the nearby holiday parks - Channel View, Diamond Farm, Warren Farm or the cluster around Brean - this is a proper outing rather than a quick stop. Young walkers will find the climb demanding but manageable. It's not a destination that'll occupy you all day, but it's exactly the sort of thing that breaks up a seaside holiday well. Bring decent shoes. The paths get boggy, and there's nothing worse than squelching back down in soggy trainers.
